Abstract

The article focuses on how far the field of drug epidemiology has evolved in the U.S. as of February 2014. Topics discussed include the impact of mass spectrometry (MS) and liquid chromatography (LC) on the detection of illicit drugs and sewage as a community-scale surveillance tool. Also mentioned are various ways of generating data to determine drug use at the population level such as telephone hotlines, fatal overdoes and drug abuse treatment centers.
