Review of: !Viva Mexico! Viva La Independencia! Celbrations of September 16 edited by William H. Beezley and David E. Lorey
Journal of Iberian and Latin American Studies
This book is a welcome addition to the study of public commemorations in Latin America. All but one chapter stick closely to a very specific commemoration, Mexico's annual celebration of Independence from Spain. Chapters are organised chronologically, beginning with the initial struggles for independence in the decade after 1810 and ending roughly in the late 1940s. The book is a transnational effort, with five contributions written in English and five translated from the Spanish. Three have been previously published in U.S. or Mexican journals.
