Abstract
El duende is popularly understood as a dark spirit that overtakes both the audience and performers in a cathartic, embodied and spiritual experience of authentic flamenco music and dance. This research was dedicated to understanding the dynamics of the phenomenon as described by famed Spanish poet, Federico García Lorca, and the possibility of translating or transmitting it through text. I attempted to produce a study of the relationship between the cognitive mode of textual representation and the physical and spiritual experience of art through an analysis which placed my own creative writing and physical study of flamenco dance in conversation with primary sources and literary analysis.
