Biology and conservation of the Juan Fernández Archipelago seabird community
Annual Report prepared for CONAF
Six species of seabirds breed on the Juan Fern·ndez Archipelago: the pink-footed shearwater (Puffinus creatopus), Juan Fern·ndez petrel (Pterodroma externa), Stejnegerís petrel (Pterodroma longirostris), Kermadec petrel (Pterodroma neglecta), white-bellied storm petrel (Fregetta grallaria), and Defilippeís petrel (Pterodroma defilippiana). The first five breed during the austral summer, while the Defilippeís petrel breeds during the austral winter. We began a research program focused on the first four species, the pink-footed shearwater, Juan Fern·ndez petrel, Stejnegerís petrel, and Kermadec petrel, investigating their basic ecology and factors potentially important for future conservation measures.
