Abstract
This research aims to place a local Chinese perspective into the issue of environmental degradation in China. Through interviews with residents of Shanghai and Jiangsu, the research investigates many aspects of the local perspective to environmental issues, including environmental changes, personal coping mechanisms, government actions to protect the environment, and the tradeoff between economic growth and environmental degradation. The interviews with an urban and rural population also highlight the differences between these two groups and their different experiences and insights to China’s environmental situation.
